Southern Black Forest Nature Park

The Southern Black Forest is one of the most beautiful and most visited recreation regions in Germany: mountains up to almost 1,500 m, wild gorges, rustic Black Forest courtyards, flourishing meadows, vineyards, dense forests - a unique mixture of nature and culture, tradition and modernity.

Park statistics

The Southern Black Forest Nature Park ranges from Herbolzheim and Triberg in the north to Waldshut-Tiengen and Lörrach in the south. To the west it includes the foothills of Freiburg and Emmendingen, to the east it extends to Donaueschingen and Bad Dürrheim to the plateau of the so called "Baar". With its 394,000 hectares, it is one of the largest nature parks in Germany with over 650,000 residents and around 10 million guests annually. In total 115 municipalities, 6 rural and urban districts as well as different clubs, associatons, companies and private individuals are members of the nature park.

What is a nature park?

A nature park is a large, rural area that is characterized by diversity, peculiarity and beauty of its nature and landscape. In contrast to a national park, the population living and working within the nature park is specifically included in the concept in order to achieve a sustainable and environmentally sound development of the region. The Southern Black Forest Nature Park is supported by a wide range of volunteer activities and sees itself as a "hub for regional development".

Aims and purposes

The main goal of the Southern Black Forest Nature Park is to preserve the unique, historically grown cultural landscape of the Southern Black Forest. It should be promoted through an harmonious coexistence of nature and people as well as further developed in a sustainable way. Therefore the nature park supports numerous projects from various fields such as tourism and culture, agriculture and forestry, nature and climate protection, architecture and settlement development as well as environmental education.
